As Jamaica braces for the potential effects of Tropical Storm Melissa, JN Money is urging remittance recipients to prioritise their safety while accessing funds, especially as agent locations may experience higher than usual customer traffic at this time.
The company is urging customers to take advantage of digital channels to reduce exposure to crowded locations and minimise the impact of any agent closures or service disruptions that may be caused by the approaching weather system.
“Many households may be relying on remittances to cover essential expenses during this period, including groceries and emergency household supplies and we’re encouraging customers to access their funds using the JN Money Card or have remittances sent straight to their bank accounts, or any digital and electronic platforms provided by their remitter,” said Horace Hines, general manager of JN Money Services, which operates the JN Money remittance brand.
“The safety of our customers always comes first and we remain committed to providing convenient, secure ways for persons to access their funds, ensuring they can manage their finances confidently and safely, even during challenging conditions,” he added.
The JN Money Card allows customers to withdraw funds at ATMs or make purchases directly at point-of-sale terminals across Jamaica. The option allows customers to access their money safely and efficiently, without the delays and crowding at agent outlets. However, customers are reminded to keep their cards and credentials secure.
Customers who receive funds directly to their accounts at any financial institution in the country, including credit unions, can also access their money through ATMs or online banking. This eliminates the need to visit agent locations. To send funds using the bank transfer option, customers in the diaspora can visit a JN Money location or access the JN Money website to enter the recipient’s account information. Once sent and the recipient gives JN Money permission to deposit the funds, the money is transferred directly into their account.
“Digital access to funds is becoming increasingly essential, and at JN Money we are continually working to improve our digital offerings, to ensure customers can leverage convenient, secure ways to manage their money while saving both time and money,” Mr Hines said.
He’s also urging customers who rely on ATMs to plan ahead by withdrawing essential cash and completing urgent transactions before weather conditions worsen.
Along with the recommendation to leverage digital channels for accessing funds, JN Money is encouraging individuals and households to take standard precautions in preparation for Melissa. These include protecting important documents, charging mobile devices, maintaining small emergency cash reserves and monitoring official weather updates.
Households are also encouraged to stock adequate food and water supplies, secure or bring indoors any outdoor furniture or loose items, inspect and clear drainage systems to prevent flooding and check roof and window conditions to minimise damage.
Families are also advised to identify safe areas within the home to take shelter in the event of strong winds or flash flooding, ensure flashlights and batteries are readily available and keep essential medications and emergency supplies within easy reach.
“Preparing early and staying vigilant can save lives and protect families,” Mr Hines emphasised. “Supporting our customers with secure access to funds is something we are grateful to provide, but safety must come first and we encourage all households to plan ahead and follow official guidance to keep safe and connected. We wish all our customers, Jamaicans and visitors safety and peace of mind during this period.”
