Several residents of the farming community in Vineyard, St. Elizabeth traded worry for excitement on Sunday, July 19, as JN Money hosted a watch party for the final match of the world’s biggest football tournament, bringing neighbours together for an afternoon of fellowship and much-needed cheer.
The event, staged through a partnership with JN Bank, Wisynco and CB Foods, transformed the Melissa-ravaged district into a lively atmosphere, with families, friends and football enthusiasts packing into the Vineyard Community Centre to watch Spain edge defending champions, Argentina 1-0 after extra time to lift the trophy. A 106th-minute goal from Ferran Torres secured Spain’s win.
Fitzroy James, president of the Vineyard Community Sport Club, said the initiative by JN Money was especially meaningful because it reflected the company’s continued commitment to the community. Earlier this year in January, JN Money partnered with British and Jamaican comedian, actor and social media personality, Harry ‘White Yardie’ Gregory, and the JN Foundation to visit the community and distribute care packages to residents affected by Hurricane Melissa.
“What JN Money has done is highly appreciated. We are still recovering from Hurricane Melissa so for them to be back in this way is huge. This is something special and we must say thank you,” he said.
Sasah Thompson, another resident, said the watch party offered the people of Vineyard a welcomed break after a difficult few months. She said a series of setbacks, worsened by October’s major hurricane, had left many residents and farmers facing economic and emotional strain.
“It was refreshing. Vineyard needed this. We are a small community with a lot of vibes, but some events have crushed us recently and Melissa just topped it off, making us depressed,” she said. “This helped to bring us back. Vineyard loves sports and to see everyone come out on this Sunday evening, being refreshed and enjoying the football with JN Money, is something we truly appreciate.”
The watch party highlighted Vineyard’s deep passion for football. Like many Jamaican communities, residents are passionate supporters of either Brazil or Argentina. However, Brazil’s early exit from the tournament saw many of its loyal fans, including Kimoy Griffiths, throwing their support behind Spain for the final, adding to the light-hearted rivalry that kept the crowd entertained throughout the afternoon.
“The best part for me was seeing Argentina lose,” she said with a laugh. “It was a really good experience, and we need more events like this in our little community. It was great to know that JN Money was thinking about us and came to give back in this way. Events like this bring the community together. Seeing everybody out enjoying themselves was really good.”
Cedrica Reid, head of marketing and sales at JN Money, said the watch party reinforced the importance of community connection during difficult times.
