As the 2025 festive season approaches, and as JN Money Services (JN Money) Limited continues to connect families in Jamaica and the diaspora through remittances, we encourage all JN Money customers to be vigilant this Christmas season as they receive their transfers and do their shopping.
What are some ways that a JN Money customer can be affected by fraud this festive season?
With several JN Money customers accessing their remittance proceeds via the JN Money Card, the possibility of their card becoming compromised arises. Here are three ways this can happen.
- Skimming – Skimming is a type of fraud in which criminals use a hidden device to capture the data from a credit or debit card when the cardholder uses an ATM or point-of-sale terminal. This stolen information can then be used to create counterfeit cards or make unauthorised transactions. JN Money card holders are encouraged to be vigilant when using their cards to conduct transactions. Customers should check the ATM and POS terminals to assess if anything is affixed to the machine that appears unusual. Should anything suspicious be observed, customers should not use the particular device or facility as this could risk their JN Money Card being compromised.
- POS Fraud – Point-of-Sale (POS) fraud is a type of financial crime where criminals steal payment information or manipulate transactions at a checkout point for fraudulent gain. JN Money customers using their cards at POS terminals should ensure that their card is always within sight when making purchases. Customers should also protect the privacy of their personal identification numbers (PIN) when conducting POS transactions.
- BIN Attack – A Bank Identification Number (BIN) attack is a cybercrime where fraudsters use automated bots to guess valid credit or debit card numbers by targeting the first few digits (the BIN) and thereafter targeting and testing combinations until they find active cards for fraudulent purchases. JN Money Card holders are encouraged to be vigilant in monitoring card balances and should the need arise, raise a report of any suspicious transaction activity associated with their card.
- Lost or Stolen Card fraud – If a customer loses their JN Money Card or if it is stolen, it must be reported immediately so that the card can be blocked to prevent any unauthorised usage or further damage. Customers can contact the JN Member Care Centre to make a report at:
- 888-438-5627, 888-991-4065/6 (Toll-free)
- 876-906-5343, 876-926-1344, 876-618-0188, 876-619-2810 (from Jamaica)
- 1-800-462-9003 (from USA & Canada)
- 0-800-328-0387 (from the UK)
Those are just some of the ways a JN Money customer can be affected by fraud this festive season. As we connect families in Jamaica and the diaspora this Christmas, we encourage our customers to be vigilant when using ATMs, POS devices and to report any unauthorised transactions associated with their JN Money card.
They can also be assured that the using the card is one of the safer ways to transact, especially during the busy holiday season, as it reduces the need to carry cash and allows for real-time monitoring of transactions. By choosing to use JN Money cards, our customers can enjoy the convenience of the season with greater peace of mind.
